Resident Call Responsibilities

(from the Policy Manual, last revised 5/24/01)

 

1. Frequency

PGY-2 Every sixth day

PGY-3 Two non-consecutive weekend call days per month

PGY-4 One weekend day per month while doing required VA rotations; as required by the training site while doing electives

 

2. Cap of 6 work ups per call day (work ups defined as psychiatric evaluation with or without a physical exam.).

 

3. Responsible for evaluation of a patient within one hour after a restraint order is given at all sites with the exception of WMC.

 

4. Specific site responsibilities:

NNAMHS: The on-call resident is available to respond to questions/requests from the hospital staff during the on call 24 hour period, 8 AM to 8 AM.

The resident is responsible to do all work ups on patients admitted to the hospital until 9 PM, Monday through Friday. During Saturday and Sunday call, the resident is responsible for work ups on patients admitted until 5 PM.

The resident is not responsible for physical exams left undone from the previous day.

The resident is not responsible to cover the psychiatric emergency service.

 

VAMC: During the assigned call day, the resident is available from 5 PM to 8 AM Monday through Friday, and from 8 AM to 8 AM on Saturday and Sunday. The resident is responsible for completing work ups (including physical exams) on all patients admitted to the psychiatric unit until 9 PM Monday through Friday, and until 5 PM on Saturday and Sunday.

 

WMC: The on-call resident is responsible for all work ups (including physical exams) 8 AM to 9 PM Monday through Friday and 8 AM to 5 PM Saturday and Sunday for patients admitted to the LifeSkills unit. The resident is responsible to contact on-call attending prior to the day of call to clarify any additional responsibilities (e.g. rounding on patients).

The resident is not responsible for responding to staff requests for orders or questions.

 

WHH: Responsibilities are assigned by the attending physician.

 

5. In the event that there is not a full complement of residents, there is no increase in the on-call frequency.

 

6. Selling of call is prohibited.

 

7. Residents must have one day off weekly.
