My family bought our first computer when I was in middle school. It was an Atari 800 with 48K of RAM. I played a lot of computer games and taught myself BASIC programming in high school. In college I took a class in Pascal programming. For one of my biomedical engineering projects, a couple friends and I used computers to process electrocardiogram signals in order to detect the underlying respiratory rate. During residency, my department paid my way to take a four-day Crystal Reports class. I've taught myself BASIC, HTML, JavaScript, Visual C++, Visual C#.Net, and Active Server Pages.
Computer-related projects that I have completed:
- A program to alphabetize and print a list of absentees at my middle school on the Apple IIe
- A very poor Pac-Man game on the Atari 800 (the ghosts got stuck in the walls)
- A disk directory program on the Atari 800
- Application of Microsoft Excel to aid data entry and printout of HCFA 1500L forms
- Application of Microsoft Excel to record and report histology laboratory statistics
- Compilation of Microsoft Excel tables containing immunoperoxidase panels, cluster designation numbers, and cytogenetic abnormalities
- Participating as a superuser in the implementation of Tamtron's PowerPath 2000 in OHSU anatomic pathology laboratories. This was a ton of work including configuring database reference tables, writing instruction manuals, training co-workers, troubleshooting, and all around technical support for the department.
- Implementation of pathology diagnosis checklists using Microsoft Word AutoCorrect macros
- Cytology quality control statistics reports written in Seagate Crystal Reports
- A Microsoft Access database for organizing cytology case study sets
- A pathology specialty boards review program CD-ROM using HTML, JavaScript, and hundreds of graphical resources
- A Microsoft FrontPage web site for my pathology specialty group
- An HTML cancer staging reference
- An insurance account analysis report on a Medisoft billing database written in Seagate Crystal Reports
- An NCAA basketball pool management utility written in Visual C++
- Implementation of a Laboratory Information System using Soft Computer products
- A web shopping cart using ASP and Microsoft Access
Current computer-related projects:
- Artificial intelligence programs to play Ataxx, Chess, Chinese Chess, and Go
